No to Stansted expansion

Eastern Region Green Party welcomed the decision by the BAA to drop its planning application for a second runway at Stansted Airport - which if granted would have led to the airport expanding to a size larger than Heathrow is today.
But despite the subsequent Tory/Lib Dem Coalition pledges to not allow new runways in the South East, noises are being made yet again about just that - with a Government policy review underway. And so once again, thousands of acres of countryside are at risk, homes could still be bulldozed and communities already suffering noise could be subjected to a trebling of flights over their heads.
Almost every council in the area objected to the Stansted second runway plan - as did the National Trust, which runs the nearby protected Hatfield Forest. And of course airport expansion means higher carbon emissions.
The Green Party stands ready to work alongside local campaigners if yet another proposal for more runways comes forward - which would perpetuate a threat faced by local people in the area since the 1960s.
