Cambridgeshire County Council Green Group leader Elliot Tong has been appointed the national party’s Democracy and Citizen Engagement spokesperson.

The national role will be crucial in pressing for real change to counter growing public distrust of the political system and the rise of the far-right.

Elliot, who is also a Cambridge City councillor, said:

“National politics is fracturing as people turn their backs on the failed, old two-party system. The Green Party has dramatically grown its number of councillors and MPs by working with communities and showing that democracy is about involving people.

“My work as a city and county councillor, representing Abbey ward in one of the most unequal cities in the country, has proved that people want to be involved in their communities and make change happen.

“I want to make sure we do even more and demonstrate nationally that there is real hope of making the real changes people want to see. We can do that by bringing more young people and excluded communities into politics.”

Short biography: Elliot Tong is the leader of the Greens on Cambridgeshire County Council, as well as a city councillor representing Abbey ward in Cambridge. He is very active on social media, where he focuses on demonstrating the impact of Green policies at a local level. Representing an area in the most unequal city in the UK, he has seen first-hand how our democratic system has disenfranchised voters, a tendency that he has actively worked to combat, visiting local schools and leading tours of Cambridge’s Guildhall.

We are pleased to announce that Annette Dunning, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Suffolk County Council, has been selected as our MP candidate for the next general election for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich.

This constituency can elect the next Green MP and we know it. Just look at how much of the constituency has elected Green councillors…

But we have a serious battle on our hands for this constituency, and others across the region

To win that battle, against parties with deep pockets thanks to their corporate donors, we need your help to fund an Elections Manager for the East of England.

You can donate at Donate – Eastern Region Green Party – can you make a recurring donation?

Mid Suffolk Green Party have won the Haughley, Stowupland and Wetherden by-election, defending the seat of the late Rachel Eburne with Agnes Watson being elected despite a nasty opposition campaign from the Conservatives.

This is a brilliant win for our only majority-Green council in the country who have been doing inspiring work for their communities.

We are sending congratulations to the team and good luck to Cllr Agnes Watson in her new role as a district councillor.

Now all eyes are on Bury St Edmunds!

After this amazing win in Suffolk, attention turns to the by-election fight we leading in the Tower division of Bury St Edmunds for Suffolk County Council.

The momentum is behind our candidate, Clare Higson.

StopTheTories.vote, one of the biggest tactical voting websites has backed the Green Party as the only viable option to stop another Conservative being elected.

We finished just 4% behind the Conservatives at the last county council election in 2021.

If we win, we will have TEN seats on Suffolk County Council, and we will position ourselves as a frontrunner for the Suffolk & Norfolk mayoral race next year.

Next Saturday 21st June, we will be heading to Bury St Edmunds on masse to deliver leaflets or knock on doors. Meet us from 11am at the Tollgate Pub, 142 Fornham Road, Bury St Edmunds IP32 6AX. Will you be there?

Can’t do next Saturday? No problem. We have action nearly every day. Find dates that work for you!

We can’t wait to see you in Bury St Edmunds.

We’re still overjoyed at winning Waveney Valley in the General Election. After 14 years of having the amazing Caroline Lucas as our one MP, it’s just fantastic that this time we sent four MPs to Parliament and one of them is from the Eastern Region.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that we started working in 2019 to win big in 2024. Now we need to start planning for a General Election in 2028 so we can win big at the next one too!

Yes I can chip in

The Eastern Region Green Party needs another £15,000 this year to cover staff and campaign costs. We are confident that we can raise this to give the best possible start on our journey to elect as many County Councillors as possible and win four MPs in the East next time.

If we bridge this gap we’ll be able to employ an Eastern Campaigns Manager just at the crucial moment and target 4 seats next time!

Thank you,

Catherine Rowett

Deputy Coordinator Eastern Region Green Party

Ps: if you can’t manage a monthly payment just now a one off is really appreciated The work starts now on the East’s next Green MP’s! Make a one-off donation! (actionnetwork.org)

A by-election has been called in Abbots Langley & Bedmond – part of the Three Rivers district where we have three councillors already but want to increase this.

Our hardworking candidate, Jane Powell is campaigning to win but with polling day on 22nd August, we need your help.

If elected, Jane would join Chris Mitchell, Narinder Sian and Cheryl Stungo on Three Rivers District Council fighting for the climate action we urgently need, to protect our local environment and for equality across our district.

To win this by-election, we urgently need volunteers to help us canvass voters, telling them about Jane’s work in the local area and letting them know why they should vote Green.

We have action days on the weekends 10th/11th August and 17th/18th August but are out campaigning during the week as well so whatever time you have spare to help get Jane elected would make a big difference.

Click below to let us know when you can help and we will be in touch.

I can help this month!

We look forward to seeing you between now and 22nd August to help elect yet another Green councillor in Hertfordshire!

All the best,

Alex Catt,

Field Organiser for the East of England
